Celebrating BC Family Doctors Day: A message from the FPSC Physician Caucus

May 19, 2023

Today, BC Family Doctors Day, we want to recognize and thank each of you for everything you do when caring for your patients and their families, and for helping to build a stronger health care system. Thank you for your compassion, continual strength, and resilience during these times of constant change. And thank you for continuing to embrace innovation and transformation through your practices, divisions, and your communities: this is how we will realize significant improvements in primary care.

Please know that we see you, we hear you, and we are committed to working alongside you to make a real difference. The new Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) Payment Model option is just one example of how, with your critically important input and as a result of your voice in the Doctors of BC primary care engagement in summer 2022, we are making significant change that will benefit our profession and all British Columbians. We continue to work on behalf of fee-for-service physicians to address your issues, and recognize the value of your work within the fee-for-service model.

We will continue to work hard as your representatives to support you, and as your physician representatives to FPSC, we will continue to advocate on your behalf.

In this edition of the FPSC Update e-newsletter, you’ll read about:

  • Expanding the urban locum program with a mid-sized community, which will be announced shortly.
  • A pilot program for after hours coverage for family physicians – Locums and after hours coverage are two of the top three burdens identified in the summer 2022 engagement.
  • An example from a clinic in Mission about how team-based care is supporting family practice.

FPSC is currently finalizing a stabilization program to help patients continue to get the care they need while the new LFP model is expanded to include facility-based care. Watch for an announcement from FPSC on stabilization funding for maternity, long-term care, and in-patient care coming soon.
