PSP: Helping strengthen practices during COVID-19

April 16, 2020

The Practice Support Program (PSP), funded by Doctors of BC and the BC Government through the General Practice Services Committee (GPSC), provides a range of activities and supports to help physicians and medical office assistants (MOAs) build and enhance their practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For physicians, participating in these initiatives is an investment in the long-term success of their practices and an opportunity to receive compensation and MainPRO+ credits.

Data Tools and Resources:

Panel Management

Physicians who have completed the the phases of panel managment can use their panel data to reach out proactively to their patients and ensure they receive the care they need.

Areas of outreach may include:

  • Contacting COPD and asthma patients to ensure they have action plans in place.
  • Proactively reaching out to patients who need routine chronic disease management care.
  • Running reports of upcoming medication expiry and doing outreach to renew/check-in with patients.
  • Checking in with patients over 60 who may be at increased risk.

Physicians who haven’t participated in panel management now have an opportunity to improve the efficiency of their practices while being compensated for their activities. Learnings include: how to easily track billings, building better workflows, identifying and clarifying roles and responsibilities of practice teams, and learning how to optimize EMR data. Visit the GPSC site for more information on panel management.

GPSC Patient Experience Tool

The GPSC Patient Experience Tool is another opportunity to improve your practice and provide better patient care. The tool enables physicians to collect feedback from patients about their experience in accessing care, including using virtual care during the COVID-19 outbreak, and using the data to improve workflow and communication.

To learn more, complete this online form and  a PSP team member will be in touch to coordinate a time to connect.

Coaching and Mentoring:

During COVID-19, and throughout the year, the PSP’s Regional Support Teams (RSTs) offer customized in-practice coaching and mentoring services to guide action plan development and coach practices to implement activities including:

Virtual care workflow:

  • Designing clinic website.
  • Collecting consent.
  • Communicating new processes with patients.
  • IT set-up troubleshooting.

Office efficiency and access

  • Implementing virtual daily huddles.
  • Changes to workflow.
  • Exam room set up and sterilization for patients requiring in-person care.

The RSTs are also available to work with divisions of family practice to assess resources already in place – or needed – for COVID-19 primary care response.

Contact information for RSTs from all regions can be found on the PSP home page.
